The Confederate Territory of Arizona was the southern areas of the present states of Arizona and New Mexico. Thomas Kidd,age 25, was mustered into a company called the Arizona Guards on Aug. 8, 1861 at Pinos Altos, New Mexico. The company's first Captain was Thomas Mastin, who was killed by Apache Indians. Mastin was replaced by Captain Thomas Helms. After the Confederate Army retreated from New Mexico to Texas, all of the independent companies that were recruited in the Confederate Territory of Arizona were consolidated into the Arizona Battalion, commanded by Philemon Herbert.
