MC/Prochette,

From an interview with Mrs.John Young,May 1918 in Kelsey's,"James George Thompson 1803-1879.Cherokee Trader-Texian-Secessionist.His Papers and Family History."1988,Texas A&M.

"Aunt Sophia Butts, wife of Major Butts,Indiana woman, handsome brunette, was first wife of Col.Holland Coffee.
She played fast and loose with the U.S. officers stationed at old Fort Washita....Finally caused her husband to be challenged to a duel by the best shot in the country. He told her about it and that if he accepted he would probably be killed. She replied,'I would rather be the widow of a brave man, then the wife of a coward.' So he accepted the challenge and was killed. They say it was a job put up by 'Aunt Sophia,'his wife, and the man whom she had promised to marry and whom she had dallied with a long time, but finally refused to marry, bringing her sister from Indiana to marry him instead."

Throughout its history Glen Eden was noted for its mistress'hospitality.Such notables as Fitzhugh Lee,Sam Houston,Robert E.Lee,Albert Sidney Johnston,James Bourland,William Quantrill,Bloody Bill and U.S.Grant were entertained there. It was said that Sidney Johnston brought its Catalpa Trees from California.

Of course its all only a memory now far under Lake Texoma.
