Re: 14th TX Cavalry (dismounted)

Is this the same 14th Texas Cavalry (Johnsons Reg't Mtd. Vols. 1st reg't Johnsons Brig.)? My ancestor John W. Conner was in this outfit and was killed at Mansfield. But I have been told that the 14th was not at Mansfield. Does anyone know how I can find out who he was maybe temporarily assigned to. His brother, Robert T. Conner was with the 1st Texas Inf. and was wounded at Suffolk Va. and sent home on wounded furlough. R.T. Conners war records states "Wounded at Suffolk Va. May 3, 1863. Reports to Gen.Smith. Was wounded at Mansfield." How can I find out who he was assigned to? I have the war records for both of them but there are gaps in them. I got my information from Footnote.com. Can anyone point me in another direction to maybe fill in those gaps.
