Re: Civil War Soldiers Lowry/Lowery Brothers

This James was part of the Lancaster, Dallas County Guards and was recruited in July 1861. This is the only spelling of Lowery in the Whitfield / Ross Texas Cavalry Brigade which included the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 27th Texas Cavalry Regiments. James was mustered into Confederate service on 6 Sep 1861 in Dallas. His unit the 6th fought in the Indian Territory, Arkansas. Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia. It was directly involved in trying to stop Sherman. James was with the unit when it was paroled in May 1865. James was sick a couple of times, and was detailed to care for the horses for a short period after one sickness. Of the 1,100 men at the start only about 200 remained in Mississippi in 1865. I found only one Lowery. You can visit the site below to find more about the service and battles. This information came from the National Archives as found in Stephen Kirks book, "Sul Ross' 6th Texas Cavalry, Six Shooters & Bowie Knives."

LOWERY, James W., Co. "F”, 6th Texas Cavalry Regiment
