Franklin C Nichols enlisted in Company "L" in the 1st Texas Infantry (enlisting in Virginia?). According to online sources he deserted his unit in Pennsylvania. I also know he was wounded and captured in Virginia. What I really want to know is who is he? That is, how old was he when he enlisted, where was he born, what was his middle name? I believe he is the same person found on the 1860 census in Liberty, Liberty County, TX - listed as F C Neckless, age 19, born in CT. If this is so his full name would be Franklin Chidsey Nichols, born in 1841 in Tolland County, CT. I know that most Confederate military records are sketchy at best. I could only copy muster rolls at Footnote, which came from the Nat'l Archives. The evidence right now is circumstantial at best. Is there any other place where I could learn more about this individual? Your input and ideas greatly appreciated. If this turns out to be him - then he is most likely my greatgrandfather's brother and I am actually looking for my great grandfather who may also have served in Texas, but that waits for now as indicated below.
