Hi Mike -

Yes, I know that this is the same person. What I am trying to learn is - are there any records somewhere that would tell me that this person was born in Connecticut. If I can connect this person to being born in CT, then I know exactly who he is.

A little background on my reason for this query. I am trying to find out who and where my great grandfather was born and his parents. I will tell you what I know and what I believe.

I can only document my great grandfather's life from 1873 to 1886. In 1883 her was in Greenwood, MS by 1884 he was in Algiers, Orelans Parish, LA where me married my ggm.
They moved to Dallas, TX where two children were born; Bonnie (1875-78) and my gf Joseph Bernard (1878-1913). By 1880 they moved back to Algiers. In 1881 his wife died and my great gf left his son, my gf, to live with his maternal grandmother. MY ggf then moved to Birmingham, AL where in 1886 he commited suicide. The cemetery shows that there is a CSA plaque on his grave.

This is what I believe - my DNA shows that I am descended from Sgt Francis Nichols (1575-1650 of Stratford, Fairfield, CT. I have narrowed down my search to the following.
A Joseph Chidsey Nichols married and had three sons; William Augustus (1837-?); Joseph Humphrey (1838-?) and Franklin Chidsey (1841-?). Joseph Chidsey Nichols died 1in 1844 and his sons were placed under the guardianship of three uncles. All were found on the 1850 census living in the homes of their uncles. None were found on the 1860 census living in Connecticut, nor has any death records been found for them in Connecticut. I believe that Franklin C Nichols, who joined the 1st Texas Infantry is the same person, but I need some sort of proof.

Since the cemetery in Birmingham, AL indicates that Joseph H Nichols also served in a Confederate unit - I am also searching for the unit he served. Now, there was a J H Nichols who enlisted as a private in the 1st Texas Heavy Artillery, company K. Also a W A Nichols also enlisted in this unit as a sergeant and mustered out as a 2nd lieutenant. If I can connect these three men to be brothers, then I have finally hit paydirt after more than thirty years of research. I am hoping that someone out there can tell me if this is so.
I only know my great grandfather as Joseph H Nichols. I know that he was born in 1838 based on various documents. Joseph Humphrey Nichols was also born in Feb, 1838.
There are many coincidences but I need (as we all know) some documentation that can connect these pieces.

Again, I am most grateful for any help or guidance.

Rich Nichols
