Terry,

I do not know the answer but I can tell you where to find the answer to your question.

In 1865 a book was published in Shereveport, Louisiana, CSA by Theo. Noel of the 4th Texas Cavalry, Arizona Brigade. Mr. Noel used his personal experiences and a diary kept by fellow soldier W.R. Howell to publish
A Campaign from Santa Fe to The Mississippi; Being A History of the Old Sibley Brigade From Its First Organization to the Present Time; Its Campaigns in New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas in the Years of 1861-2-3-4. (long title) Only 3 of these books exist, but in 1961 a reprint was made from the original in Raleigh, NC by Charles R. Sanders, Jr.

You can find the reprint at Lamar University Library or via inter-library Loan. It is an amazing book to read and details where segments of the old Sibley Brigade-"Arizona Brigade" were located and all of the stuff they did. Much of the information in the book is not in the Official Records, nor National Archives.

The University of Texas (Austin) has the diary of W.R. Howell but I am not sure if they will loan it due to the rarity. Really Noel's book is the best place for you to find the answer, but I thought you should know where Howell's Diary is located, too.

Good hunting!

Sincerely,
William Bozic
