Marion Goff, age 25, Captain A. F. Moss' Company, 4th Regiment Texas Dragoons,* joined for duty and enrolled October 25, 1861 at Hempstead, Austin County, Texas by Capt. A. F. Moss for 12 months, his presence at the muster-in roll, dated October 25, 1861, is not noted, no other records

* This company subsequently became Company K, 12th Regiment Texas Cavalry. 28, 1861, The 12th (also known as the 4th and as Parsons'**) Regiment Texas Cavalry was mustered into the service of the Confederate States October 28, 1861, for twelve months and re-organized in May, 1862. In the field it was also called Dragoons and Mounted Volunteers

Note: The only other surviving muster roll for Company K, covered the period September 1 to December 31, 1863 where they were stationed "In the field near Hines [sp?] Louisiana. As he was not listed he must have been dropped from the rolls sometime between November 1861 and September, 1863. This could have been the result of discharge, death, desertion, capture, etc. The latter would not be expected as no Federal POW records exist.

12th Regiment, Texas Cavalry (Parson's Mounted Volunteers)

12th Cavalry Regiment was organized with about 940 men in August, 1861, by Colonel W.H. Parsons. Most of the men were from Hempstead, Fairfield, Georgetown, and Waxahachie, and Ellis and Hill counties. This unit served in Hawes' and Steele's Brigade, Trans-Mississippi Department and skirmished the Federals in Arkansas and Louisiana. During 1865 it was in Northern Texas guarding approaches from the Indian Territory. The regiment was included in the surrender on June 2. Its commanders were Colonel William H. Parsans, Lieutenant Colonels Andrew B. Burleson and John W. Mullen, and Majors Locklin J. Farrar and E. W. Rogers.

Originally published in 1989 by the Texas Christian University Press, Fort Worth, Texas, 355 pages, maps, roster, cost $ 40.00. Parson's Texas Cavalry Brigade in the Civil War was comprised of the 12th Texas, the 19th Texas, the 21st Texas and Morgan's 13th Texas Cavalry Regiments and served in the Western Theater fighting in Arkansas, Missouri, and Louisiana. The book includes detailed quotes from soldiers' letters.
