My G Grandfather Sgt. J.D. Calloway Co B 15th Alabama Inf. applied for a pension in 1914 Mills County, Texas, Pension # 27684. He and one of his witnesses said he was only a private. The witness said he was only a private while he was in the Regt. This is true as he was wounded in both arms and left the Regt. and J.D. was promoted after he left, but they knew each other after the war. I think they were working the system. On the form he did say he was a retired physician but I always wondered why he said he was only a private. It was allowed June 1st, 1914. He died Jan. 30, 1918 and got a mortuary warrant of thirty dollars which the state allowed for burial expenses.
