Colonel Carter(Tx) was allowed by Richmond to create a regiment of for Texas volunteers but instead he formed three. The 21st Texas cavalry(1 Texas Lancers),24th Texas Cavalry(2nd Texas Lancers, and 25th Texas Cavalry(3rd Texas Lancers). Most were made up of conscripts and varied in length from 6 months to a year. Depended mostly to terms agreed to by the conscript. The 21rd was formed in Hempstead,Tx. in the Spring of 1862 and served mainly,at first in Arkansas and Missouri while 24 th &25 th became part of Grandbury's Texas Brigade and later sent to Arkansas Post(Fort Hindman). After 1862 the remainder was added to Parson's Cavalry Brigade.
