Lt. Van Robbins. "It was about the year 1863, that Indians were discovered near the camp of Capt. Totty's and in the vicinity of the present town of Forestburg, in Montague County. Lt. Robbins and about eight soldiers took the Indian trail and in a few moments came upon approximately twenty savages, within one-half mile of the present town of Forestburg. Lt. Robbins ordered his men to dismount, and almost immediately he, himself, was on the ground; but it seems the soldiers disobeyed his orders, and remained on their steeds. After they had "Fired-out," it seems the soldiers retreated, and left Lt. Robbins on the ground. Needless to say, in a short time, the brave lieutenant was killed."
.
McConnell’s note: Author interviewed W.A. (Bud) Morris, Bob Savage, Charlie Grant, Joe Bryant, and one or two others who then lived in that section.
.
The above story is from Joseph Carroll McConnell’s WEST TEXAS FRONTIER, Volume II. Palo Pinto
TX, Texas Legal Bank-Book Co. (1939).

I've found most of the soldiers of Bourland's Regt in the 1860 census. Of course, most lived in North Texas, but about 15 lived in south of Dallas, but a few lived in Arkansas, Colorado, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi and Virginia. Since Bourland's Regt was active toward the end of the War, many served in Bourland's Regt. because of of the conscription laws, plus they could ride a horse plus because of the conscription laws.
.
Many men in Bourland's Regt were older, i.e. over age 45. Many had served in North Texas militias organized 1837-1845 and/or the Mexican War.
.
Lt. Van Robbins. ..Again, please help identify Lt. Van Robbins.
