The Texas in the Civil War Message Board

Book to read

Sorry , I may be late on this but I finish reading this last December, JEFF DAVIS'S OWN. It is the story of the U.S. Cavalry unit established by the then Sect. of War Jefferson Davis to fight in Texas to defend our frontier and keep us safe. Of the officers, 12 would go on to become Generals in the War Between the States. John B. Hood gets his Texas connection here. It is a good read, and one well studied. I had a history course from Mr. Sid Richardson at Hardin Simmons University in Abilene when he was in his 80's back in 1965. He was the authority on History of West Texas and I had many wonderful hours to visit with him. He had only one course to teach and he had students grade his papers. He did little else but teach. So there is a great deal in this book that I recall him talking about. He after all attended HSU in 1905 when many of those he talked about were his age when I talked with him.
