Thank you, Charles. The options are correct, I'm sure. Either buried in the area or sent home, I suspect the former. Family lore has him dying of a fever after arriving in camp. I have often womdered by what means his wife and four children learned of his passing. In the 1860 Coryell County census, James M. Payne is present with wife, Mary Ann Latham Payne and their four children. In the 1870 Census, Mary Ann is gone and her brother, Ambrose Latham is shown as head of the family along with her mother, Sarah Latham. The four children are also present. I never did learn what happened to Mary Ann. Her mother, Sarah, died in 1874 and was buried at Salem Cemetery.
