James M. Payne's file is a short one. He was a Private in Co. E, 30th Texas Cavalry (Gurley's Regiment, 1st Texas Partisans). He enlisted at the age of 38, and appears on the company muster roll dated 12 July 1862, joined for 3 years. He reported for duty on 21 August 1862 at Camp McCulloch. The record is silent after that.
If James M. Payne died while in camp at Camp McCulloch, it's possible he's buried in the Confederate section of Oakwood Cemetery in Tyler. That section was set aside for 231 soldiers who died in the nearby CS training grounds during the war. See the following link:
