Re: Hard Fight at Corinth and the Hatchie

As I read this letter, it brought to mind that the 2nd Texas and the 6th were fighting in close proximity. I had to get Cozzen's book, The Darkest Days of The War. The 42nd Alabama was on Phifer's far right, next was the 2nd Texas. These two regiments were in front of Battery Robinett. Next was the 35th Mississippi and then the 6th and 9th Texas Cavalry (dismounted), the 3rd Arkansas and last the 1st Arkansas Cavalry (Dismounted)(Stirman's Sharpshooters). The 2nd, 6th and 9th all ended up at Robinett, before retreat. The Sharp Shooters and parts of three Arkansas units ended up in the center of town before retreat. Cabell was to follow the Arkansas units, but instead went to help the 2nd Texas. Had he followed the Arkansas Regiments he might have captured Rosecrans.
The 6th Texas followed the Sharp Shooters across the Hatchie Bridge the next day Maury's Brigade and the 27th Texas Cavalry (dismounted) were in front when they ran head on and were flanked by Union Forces. Sul Ross was in command of Phifer's Brigade and using the beat up 6th Texas, put together a blocking force. The 27th an Maury's Brigade were malled. The 6th and Sharp Shooters working set up a base of fire, Artillery was brought up and the Corps was able to slip west, cross the river and continue on to Holly Springs. Three Union Regiments were shot up trying to block Van Dorn. It was called a Union Victory, but it was a costly one.
Our boys did well.
