Battle at Nueces River Civil War Sesquicentennial Event Looking for Descendents

The Comfort Heritage Foundation is hosting a Civil War Sesquicentennial Event on Friday and Saturday, August 10th and 11th, 2012 to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Battle at the Nueces River. Everyone is welcome to the two day program, but we are especially looking for descendants from the Unionists and Confederates sides. If you know a descendant or if you are a descendant, please contact the foundation at comfortheritagefoundation@gmail.com or call the Comfort Chamber of Commerce at 830-995-3131.
On Friday August 10th, 2012 at 8:00 p.m. there will be a folk opera, The Blues and the Grays, composed by Richard Jacome, author and musician to commemorate the event. It will be presented below the Treue der Union Monument on High and 3rd Streets. It will be free. Please bring your lawn chairs, flash lights, water bottles and bug repellant.
On Saturday, August 11th, starts at 10:00 at the Treue der Union Monument with a Memorial Program honoring those men who died in the Nueces Battle and Massacre. Those that died at the battle are buried at the Treue der Union monument. Paul Burrier, Leakey historian and author, will speak. Burrier has ancestors who fought on both sides of the Civil War, Union and Confederate. This will be followed with a reading of the thirty six names carved on the Monument. Hopefully, descendants of each man will be found who would like to call their ancestor's name. The commemoration at the monument will also be a passport event for the Kendall County 150th celebration taking place thru out the year.
The Memorial Program will be followed by a German lunch in the park starting at 11:00. There will be commemorative items to purchase and authors present who have written books about the Germans involved in the Nueces Battle and Massacre happy to sign their books and discuss the circumstances. There will be a slide show of battle field property and history. Boerne Village Band will play in gazebo. Tickets will be $8.00 tell August 1st and $10.00 the day of.
At 1:00pm there will be a Symposium, “What a Tough Spot to Be In", at the Immanuel Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall, across from the Treue der Union Monument. Sign up will be required because there is a 150 maximum occupancy fire code. $10.00 will be required to reserve a spot. Speakers will be Dr. James Kearney, Paul Burrier, Anne Stewart, Dr. Charles Grear, and Casper Fritz’s descendant, Carlos Juenke. All have written books. Don’t delay because you won’t want to miss out on this.
