I am researching the above company, in which my g-g grandfather, Washington Marion Wilhite, enlisted on March 16, 1864, for 6 months. I have been able to compile a nearly complete muster roll (67 of a nominal 70 members) of this unit from an ancestry.com database of Muster Roll Index Cards, 1838-1900. Co I was under the command of Capt. George R Shannon, and the 2nd Brigade was under the command of Col. J F Davis. As I understand it, these Texas State Troops were not a part of the CSA. I have a number of questions that I have not been able to answer. First, I understand that after a reorganization in 1864, the 2nd Brigade District was made up of counties in southeast Texas, whereas my g-g grandfather and most of the other members of this Company, including Capt. Shannon, were from Johnson County or other nearby counties. Can anyone help me understand this apparent discrepancy? Second, enlistment was at Camp Isam. I have not been able to locate Camp Isam in any publications or web sites about the Texas State Troops or Texas units in the CSA. Can anyone shed any light on the location and fate of of Camp Isam? Finally, I am interested in any information on the activities, particularly military engagements, of Co. I. Family lore says that W M Wilhite was injured during his service, and that while he was enlisted as a corporal, he became a major during his service. I realize that many men who served during this and other wars took on "honorary" titles after their service, and this may have been the case with Wilhite, But I would be interested in any information about field promotions, and more broadly whether there were majors at the company level of the Texas State Troops during this time period. The roster I have compiled has one captain, one first lieutenant, two second lieutenants, five sergeants and four corporals. There are no majors on the roster.
