Joseph W Rhodes enlisted in the 13th Texas Cavalry, Company B, on February 22, 1861 at Crockett, Houston, Texas. He is listed on muster rolls for February 22 through April 30, 1862 in Crockett, Texas. He is then listed on Muster Rolls for May and June 1862. On June 6, he is transferred to Captain Viser's Company (6th Texas Cavalry Battalion, Company B). He is then listed on Muster Rolls for September and October 1862. In the remarks, he is listed as having died on October 25, 1862 at Camp Nelson. This makes him one of the first to die in the typhoid fever, pneumonia and tuberculosis outbreak that hit Camp Nelson, Arkansas.
