when a co has a "sub co"; what is this called?

to those of you that have seen my initials or name before, simple questions are common. i have an ancestor in the 1st va artillery, co c. this company c has a I, II, and a III. what are these "sub companies" technically referred to? for an awful lot of family in c w history from va, i am really just beginning this search.
