He was on the ballot in the border states, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky and Missouri. My point being that even with the addition of Lincoln on the ballot in these states that the border states repudiated the party of Lincoln. West Virginia shows itself solidly with the rest of Virginia, as do the other border states. The only part of West Virginia that went with Lincoln was the area around Wheeling, and if you look at a map it is easy to see why, the northern panhandle to all intent and purpose is, in spirit, more a part of Pennsylvania than West Virginia. Though a Confederate regiment was raised in Ohio County, I'm sure to the chagrin of the Wheeling junta.
