Re: Obscure units in the Army of Northern Virginia

Correct. There were Missourians at New Market. This was a unit arbitrarilay designated Co. A, 1st Missouri Cavalry. They were not affiliated with the original 1st Mo. Cav. It was commanded by Capt. James Woodson and was made up of Missourians paroled in the summer of 1863. Instead of returning to their original units these men elected to serve with Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. The company was assigned to Imboden's Northwestern Virginia Brigade. In addition to New Market, they fought at North Anna, Cold Harbor, and Early's Shenandoah Campaign of 1864. After the 1864 Shenandoah Campaign the company served with McNeil's Partisan Rangers until the close of hostilities.
