Re: Falling Waters
In Response To: Battle of Falling waters ()

Rickie,
Falling Waters was a location where many Confederates were captured on 14 July 1863 as they tried to retreat over the Potomac river, a day that marked the end of the Gettysburg campaign, but there was no pitched battle there. Over 40 men from the 22nd Virginia Battalion were taken prisoner at Falling Waters, which exceeded the number who were wounded or killed in the Battalion during the battle of Gettysburg itself. The three other units in that brigade (40th, 47th, and 55th Virginia regiments), under the command of Colonel Brockenbrough, also lost many men as prisoners at Falling Waters and this suggests they were the rear guard of the Confederate army and were under heavy pressure from the advancing Federal (Union) forces as they waited their turn to cross the river. Don't forget that the rebel soldiers were exhausted from the constant marching, lack of sleep and food, and the rain formed deep mud that added to their hardship. Many of the men were past human endurance and simply could no longer keep up and were captured.
