Re: Soldier lookup, Bedford Co. Va.

Lisbon, Bedford County, Virginia is one of the "lost villages".

William R. JOnes appeared in the ara when he purchased the northern 404 acres of the Francis Read grant. This grant surveyed in 1766 lay directly south of Samuel Williams' tract and straddled the Long Branch, which by the 1800's was called Reads Creek. Through the middle of it ran the old main road and the turnpike. Three of Capt. Jones' sons, namely Robert C. Jones, Daniel P. Jones and John W. Jones would come to own much of the land in the area surrouding Lisbon. An old home survives today across the road from Bocock's Crossing (where the turnpike crossed the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad) on the hill. Dating back to the early 1800's, it is not known whether the house was built by Francis Read, William R. JOnes, Tandy Key Jones [William's son] or by Theopholis C. Scruggs. Below the house lies the Scruggs cemetery. The current owners are the family of Tandy Jones [another one named for the first one] who bought the tract in 1891.

Until about 1849 this area was mostly rural with the occasional store or blacksmith shop. Most were located on the western road or its successor, the Lynchburg-Salem Turnpike. The turnpike had been built in 1820's. There were mills along the major streams to grind grain and saw lumber. By 1849 the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad began obtaining rights of way to put in the railroad which was completed in 1856. In almost every case, where there was a depot, there was a post office and Lisbon was no different.

JOnes' Depot is referenced on the 1859 deed when Robert C. Jones bought the eastern end of the Campbell estate -- located about 300 yards south of the road junction at Lisbon. The railroad was gone by 1905 when the Norfolk and Southern rerouted the tracks south of Lisbon.

Besides the Campbells, Williams and Jones families, there were others: Foldens, Marshalls, Agnews, Taylors, Williamsons, McMillans and many others.
