In Response To: 34th Va. Cav. at Gettysburg ()

The book on Regimental Losses at Gettysburg lists only one casualty (a death) in the 34th Virginia at Gettysburg, but in reviewing the roster compiled in Johnny L. Scott's booklet in H. E. Howard's Virginia Regimental Histories Series, I could not identify the man. The 36th did not play a major role at Gettysburg, but several were identified as wounded or captured during the retreat back to Virginia. In addition, several men from the 34th served as couriers during the battle, including six soldiers from Company A under Lt. J. Coleman Anderson, whose interesting account appears in Confederate Veteran magazine, vol. 12, No. 10 (October 1904). Anderson saw Lee, Ewell, and Rodes on the first day. Another courier was W. H. Blankenship, who also delivered dispatches to Lee and Ewell on the first day before rejoining his regiment and fighting dismounted on 3 July against Union cavalry.
