This was Joseph Henry Massey, age 12. His mother was Elzabeth Holloway Massey. Joseph's parents both died by 1860 (father in 1859 and mother 9 months later in 1860) He and his four brothers and a half brother, ages 2-16, were taken in by their maternal grandmother, Joanna Royston Holloway. As he family story goes, Joseph ran away from his grandmother's home, "Spring Garden" to find his older half brother, Pvt. John T. Massey, who was with the Caroline Light Artillery. Pvt. John Massey was given leave to take the boy home. He took him instead to the Garrett farm. One of their mother's cousins, Fannie Holloway, was the second wife of Richard Garrett. Lucinda Holloway (in who's lap Booth died) was the younger sister of Fannie Holloway Garrett, and also the cousin of Jospeh Henry Massey's mother. The Garrett farm was close to "Spring Garden" and Joseph Massey had grown up playing with his Garrett couins.

When my cousin was cleaning out the Massey "home place" when her grandfather, Huron Massey, died. She found a piece of bark wrapped in a piece of paper. On the paper, written in the handwriting of Joseph H. Massey, it said something like, "from the tree where the man with J. Booth was tied" This would have been David "Davey" Harold.

This "home place" where the bark was found is in Clay County, Missouri near the small town of Kearney. It was built by Joseph Henry Massey. (He and two of his brothers moved from VA to MO in 1872 upon the death of their grandmother, Joanna R. Holloway.) The story is that Joseph was present, on the porch, when Booth died. He took a piece of bark from the tree after the soldiers left. The story of Booth dieing in Lucinda Holloway's lap and her cutting a lock of his hair is in "MANHUNT The 12-DAY CHASE FOR LONCOLN'S KILLER" by James L. Swanson as well as other accounts of his death.
