Re: Capt. Thornton's Company, VA Light Artillery

I don't think so.....this was a church that was torn down......and there are (I'm told)
4 markers in the small cemetery.

Eagle’s Nest Methodist Church

Located on the Passing Road .1 mile from the intersection of Hustle Road (Route 637), Dodge City Road (Route 665) and Passing Road (Route 625) heading towards the Sparta Road. There is a large oak tree at the site. Bill Turpin owns the land around the church site and there is a cable across the former entrance to the church. The site covers approximately one acre and is badly overgrown with a field on the north side and the back side.

Eagle’s Nest Church was built on land donated by Mr. & Mrs. John E. Anderson and the building materials were donated by the members. Rev. E. L. Peerman was pastor in 1904, Rev. W. L. King in 1923, Rev. W. R. Reed in 1925, Rev. Henry Lee Robison (sp-Robinson?) in 1931. The church was not painted and remained so for many years after its construction. Due to an increase in crime in the area and the danger for members getting to the services, the church discontinued for a while in the 1920’s, but four years later in 1929, the church was revived and was admitted back in the Methodist circuit. In the early 1930’s repairs were made to the church and in 1940 a new roof was added along with other repairs and the purchase of a new piano. Shortly thereafter, the church closed for good and in the 1950’s the building was disassembled and taken away. Only one burial can be documented here and probably was one of the last.

Back of the church site near the edge of the back field, there are several cedars on the edge of the field. Between this and the back of the church site is an overgrown area of periwinkle where the cemetery is located. Only four graves could be identified as there are marked by three large and one small field stone. There are indentures in the ground which would indicate other graves. The area of the cemetery is approximately 15 yards square.
