Hutchinson co-authored a called "The Blue and the Gray" which is a history of the war. Many of his stories take place on the Peninsula in 1864, including some at Deep Bottom. This leads me to believe that he was stationed in the area.

It is also possible that he was in a cavalry regiment, perhaps the 24th Virginia Cavalry.
