In Response To: Pickett's Charge ()

Mr. Boone,

To date, the definitive account of these individual men is Nothing But Glory: Pickett’s Division at Gettysburg by Kathy Georg Harrison and John W. Busey. The methodology of arriving at the roster appears in the book and primarily involves the company muster rolls of June 30, 1863. [The postwar sources are from various volumes of the Virginia Regimental Histories Series.]

As with virtually all compiled rosters, some men may slip through the cracks—and some who may be included, do not belong.

Robert Ayres— Not listed by Harrison and Busey. Not in compiled service records of the 28th Virginia. Appears only in postwar source.

Jonas T. Gish— Listed by Harrison and Busey as present at Gettysburg. Wounded in action in 1862 at Frazier’s Farm.

John R. Isaacs— Listed by Harrison and Busey as present at Gettysburg. Later captured at Five Forks in 1865. Imprisoned at Point Lookout.

Christian Jenkins— Not listed by Harrison and Busey. Compiled service records of the 28th Virginia indicate that he was captured at Farmville in 1865 and imprisoned at Point Lookout.

Madison Linkenhoker— Harrison and Busey and the Compiled Service Records list a Matthew [Mathew] Linkenhoger with the 28th Va.

Richard P. Lollis— Listed by Harrison and Busey as present at Gettysburg. Wounded in action. Captured in 1865 at Harper’s Farm. Imprisoned at Point Lookout.

William R. Lynch— Not part of Pickett’s Division. Enlisted in 19th Va Cavalry in March 1863. Expedition to Beverly, West Virginia (June 29-July 4, 1863)

William Manges— Listed by Harrison and Busey as William J. Mangas. Wounded at Sharpsburg in 1862.

David H. Mangus— Not listed by Harrison and Busey. Appears in records of 28th Va. as David Mangas.

Daniel D. Obenshain— Not listed by Harrison and Busey. Appears on service records as a fifer.

James P. Obenshain— Listed by Harrison and Busey as present at Gettysburg. Captured at Gettysburg on 7/3/1863. POW at Point Lookout.

Martin Van Buren Obenshain— Not listed by Harrison and Busey. Appears as M.V.B. Obenshain, musician, on service record.

Peter M. Obenshain— Not listed by Harrison and Busey. Appears on a postwar record as a drummer, discharged 1861.

Zebulon T. Obenshain— Not listed by Harrison and Busey. Appears as Z. T. Obenshain on a postwar record. Discharged 1861, underage.

Samuel W. Overstreet— Listed by Harrison and Busey as present at Gettysburg. Deserted July 18, 1863.

Joseph M. Payne— Not listed by Harrison and Busey as present at Gettysburg. Harrison and Busey list a Joseph H. Payne of the 28th Va. as present at Gettysburg, shot in the leg and captured. The Compiled Service Records list both Joseph M. Payne and a Joseph H. Payne as members of the 28th Va. Both were in Company D. Both enlisted on 5/20/1861 at Bedford, Virginia. Both were 21. The 1850, 1860 and 1870 census records of Bedford County, Virginia lists only one “Joseph Payne”. Quite possibly one and the same.

Nathaniel Shaver— Not listed by Harrison and Busey as present at Gettysburg. Appears only on postwar records as a member of the 28th Va.

Andrew Smiley— Not listed by Harrison and Busey as present at Gettysburg. However, the 14th Va. Cavalry was present at Gettysburg with Stuart. Records do not indicate if Smiley was present or not.

Jacob Wingert— Not listed by Harrison and Busey as present at Gettysburg. Captured at Howlett’s House in 1864. POW at Point Lookout.

George W. Zimmerman— Not listed by Harrison and Busey as present at Gettysburg. Compiled Service Records indicate that Zimmerman died from diphtheria in Richmond in August 1862.
