Peter A. Saville enlisted as a Private in Company K, 18th Virginia Cavalry December 1, 1862 at Hampshire County by John H. Piles for the War, captured in Loudon County, Virginia* July 16, 1864, sent to Old Capitol Prison, Washington, D. C., transferred to Elmira, N. Y. prison camp July 23, paroled for exchange March 2, 1865, admitted to Jackson Hospital, Richmond, Virginia March 7, 1865 with Debilitas, sent to Camp Lee, Chimborazo the next day, paroled April 26, 1865 by Provost Marshall, Dept. of West Virginia, age 30, resident of Hampshire County

The 18th Regiment Virginia Cavalry was organized about December 15,1862, with ten companies, A to K, most of the members of which had served in the 1st Regiment Virginia Partisan Rangers (subsequently the 62nd Regiment Virginia Infantry).

*"Saturday, July 16th. We started at an early hour for Snicker's Gap, Gordon in front, followed by Wharton, then the train, then Rodes and Ranseur. The Yankee cavalry, from Hillsboro, fell on our train at Purcellville** and captured and destroyed some 30 wagons before Rodes got up, but we soon drove them off and took a piece of artillery and killed and captured several." Dec. 31, 1863 to Aug. 31, 1864, dated Aug. 31, 1864, Stationed near Winchester, Virginia

The Co. started from Oakland, May 5, 1864. Marched in direction of Narrows New River. Moved across the River & around to Newport. Engaged the enemy there. Then returned to Oakland, Va. May 23, 1864. From there to Staunton, from there to Lynchburg. Engaged the enemy & fought well. From there to Fincastle. From there to Harrisonburg, Va. From there to Fredrick City, Md. From there to Georgetown. Marching & Skirmished with the enemy every day until we returned to Va. 18 July 1864.

Sept. 7 Oct. 1864, dated Oct. 31, 1864. Stationed at Milford, Va.

The company was engaged in the fight at Winchester, Va., Sept. 18, 1864, about Fisher's Hill Sept. 22, 1864. The Company was marching & skirmishing almost daily until October 13th when we crossed the mountains to Millford, Va., fought the enemy there two days besides scouting 7 skirmishing frequently during our stay at that place.
