The Virginia in the Civil War Message Board

VA stone for Peter M.Nicely-22nd Va.Inf.Regt.

This VA gravestone is not the typical upright marker for a Confederate soldier. I have seen maybe 5 or 6 of this type marking a CS grave. I was under the impression this shield design stone was the typical one for Yankees or couple of later wars. As you can see someone placed a US flag on this grave,thinking that they only had US flags on hand when marking veterans graves in this cemetery. Any comments or clarification on this stone appreciated.
