George W. Butt enlisted as a Private in Captain Jacob Vickery's Company, Major Corprew's Battalion, Light Artillery*, April 18, 1861 at Norfolk by Major Bradford for one year,

* This company was also known as Captain Vickery's Company of Artillery, 6th Regiment Virginia Infantry.
The 6th Regiment Virginia Infantry was organized May 13, 1861, and accepted into the service of the Confederate States on July 1, 1861. (1st) Companies B and E were disbanded September 1, 1861, and (2nd) Companies B and E were assigned to the regiment about October 1, 1861. A part of Captain Vickery's Artillery Company was organized as an independent company June 8, 1861, under Captain Frank Huger, and finally became Captain Moore's Company Virginia Artillery. About July 1, 1862, Captain Ferguson's Company was assigned to Company H, 12th Regiment Virginia Infantry, and Captain Victery's and Weisiger's Companies as (1st) Company H and Company I, 16th Regiment Virginia Infantry respectively. The regiment was reorganized May 3, 1862.

This company was reorganized into the Company under the command of Captain Frank Huger June 8,1861 and finally under Captain Moore.

Infirmary, Present for pay Feb 28, 1865, captured at Petersburg April 2, 1865, sent to Point Lookout, Maryland prison camp, arrived at City Point, Virginia April 4, released June 5, 1865

** Captain Moore's (also known as Captain Huger's) Company Virginia Light Artillery was formed by the division of Captain Vickery's Light Artillery Company, 6th Regiment Virginia Infantry, about June 8, 1861. It served in various temporary field organizations which were composed of Independent companies.
