Joseph Mangus, who died in April 1865, is listed in the Compiled Service Records of the 36th Va Inf., under the name Joseph Mangess, Pvt. 2d Co. D/36Va Inf. He enlisted at Narrows of the New River, 1 Apr. 1864. Was hosp., typhoid fever, Charlottesville, 1 to 13 Sept. 1864 when he was released to duty. He was present in his unit 31 Oct. 1864 and captured at Waynesboro 2 March 1865. He was a POW at Harper's Ferry until 9 March 1865 and at Ft. Delaware 12 March to 7 or 8 April when he died of erysipelas. Union POW records give both dates of death. He was buried "on the Jersey shore."
