Chaffen's Farm, July 2, 1864

Ths petitioner, Peter McGhee, Private in company A, 25th Battalion, Va. Vols, respectfully represents that his home is in Hanover county, near Cold Harbor - that the public [?] enemy, while in that neighborhood, robbed him of all his provisions, destroyed his crops, stole his negroes, ruined his house and furniture, and that his wife and children have been compelled to leave home for shelter and subsistence - that there are crops there which would contribute to their support, but that his personal labor is necessary to cultivate and secure the said crops.

In consideration of the premises, he requests a furlough of ten days.

Very respectfully, Peter McGhee, Private, Co. A, 25th Va Battalion

Approved and respectfully forwarded, J. ? Vaughan, 1st Lieut. Comd. Co, A, 25 Va Batt.
