Re: James A. Lee, Co H, 2nd Va Cav

Thanks for the reply.

I believe there is a good chance this is James Albert Lee. The James E. enlisting in Co. H. 2nd Cav is obviously James Albert since the death dates in the bible and in the official record correspond. The armies were skirmishing in the area of Tom's Brook on the 8th preceeding the larger battle on the 9th. The bible record saying the was killed in Rockingham Co. instead of Shennadoah Co. could have been assumed if one of his superiors subsequently wrote from Rockingham advising of the death. As for the given name, I think he must have gone by his middle name Albert - which was also easy enough to confuse with Elbert and could explain the discrepancy in the enlistment record.

I assume the body must have been initially buried with a wooden marker and subsequently relocated to its present grave. Had it not been buried, there would not likely have been any way to identify it later. I suppose the original burial was nearby to were he fell or else at a field hospital. I wonder if anybody knows where the Ramsburg farm of that time was located. Also, I wonder if there is any record of the date he was buried in the cemetery at Woodstock. A field trip may be in order here!
