Hospitalized Stanardsville by 4/30/62 when absent from unit. Present in unit 6/30/62. Deserted to enemy 9/15/62 near Antietam, Md. Paroled near Sharpsburg, Md., 9/20/62. Remained absent from unit through 1/1/63 when reported AWOL. Present in unit 5/2-3/63. Court-martial sentence set aside or remaining charges dropped 5/29/63 for gallantry at Chancellorsville. AWOL from unit 7/23/63 to 1/12/64. Court-martialed for AWOL 2/11/64; sentenced to ride a wooden horse every other day for one month, and to perform extra police duty and fatigue duty for one month. Named on unit clothing roll 3/29/64. Captured 5/5/64 Wilderness. Point Lookout, Md., by 5/17/64 when he, age 28, indicated he had been conscripted and wanted to take oath of allegiance and "go North." Joined U.S. Army, age 26, 6/13/64 Point Lookout. 42nd Va. reported on 10/31/64 that he had forfeited pay and allowances for AWOL period and charged him for loss of weapon, accouterments and forty rounds of ammunition. Served as Pvt., E/1st U.S. Vol. Inf. 6/13/64 to 9/21/65 when discharged, St. Louis, Mo., on surgeon’s certificate of disability. Disability due to wd., two round musket balls entered right. forearm and exited at elbow, shot by Indians while on outpost duty, Ft. Rice, Dakota Territory, 5/19/65. 5’ 8 ½”, blue eyes, brown hair, dark complexion in 1865. Postwar applied for pension for U.S. service 1/22/69. Servant and laborer, age 45, Appomattox County 1880 and pensioner there in 1900. Widow, Elizabeth, applied for pension on basis of his U.S. service 9/29/1904.
