Thanks for contacting me.

Some of the information about court-martial sentences is referenced in the Compiled Service Records. For example, the information about Cumby's court-martial sentence being set aside or remaining charges dropped on 5/29/63 for gallantry at Chancellorsville, is referenced in Cumby's CSR by a note card that says "Remaining sentence remitted, Dept. and Army of Northern Virginia, S.[pecial] O.[rder] 145, [paragraph] 12, [dated] 29 May 1863. To get the details of that order one must go to the Special Orders of the Army of Northern Va., which are contained on National Archives Microfilm M921. Roll 2.

Getting the information about Cumby's later courtmartial was a little more complex. The first lead, "Tried for AWOL; sentenced to company punishment," came from "Roster of the Courts-Martial in the Confederate States Armies," Jack A. Bunch, White Mane Books, Shippensburg, Pa. Bunch, in compiling this magnificent reference work, relied on a large number of sources in the National Archives, to include Court-martial records (Record Group 109, Chapter 1, Volumes 194-199); Endoresements on Court-martial records (Chapter 1, Volume 201). These latter works are not on microfilm. To save myself a trip to the Archives I wrote Bunch and he provided more detail on Cumby's later punishment: "Sentenced to ride a wooden horse every other day for one month, and to perform extra police duty and fatigue duty for one month." Bunch was not able to find the Special or General Oder publishing results of trial, but did find a summary of the court martial in the National Archives, Records of Courts-Martial, 1861-1865, 6 vols., (Ch. 1, vols 194-199), Records of the Adjutant and Inspector General’s Department, Correspondence, Reports and Other Records Relating to Departmental Functions War Department Collection of Confederate Records, Record Group 109, National Archives, Washington, DC.

Hope this helps.
