The Virginia in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Anyone interested in Five Forks?

A few years ago I visited the site (a number of times). The park service has a small ranger office with a little of the history located in that building. My knowledge comes from family history. My G.G.G Grandmother lived in a house there called "Burnt Quarter." The battle maps have it identified as "Mrs. Gilliams" home. My G. Grandmother told me stories of how she met this Yankee General at her front door who wanted to use her home as his headquarters. When she pointed a shotgun at him, he left. His name was General Custer. One of the best books on the battle is "The Battle of Five Forks" by Ed Bearss and Chris Calkins. It is one of the Virginia Civil War Battles and Leaders Series. I have a little more information that I will attempt to locate.
