Estimate of Stuart's losses Oct. 11, 1863

This is my attempt to estimate Stuart's casualties in the fighting around Brandy Station Oct. 11, 1863. A low estimate is 300 and a high one around 340.

Please feel free to critique what I have written.

Preliminary Estimate of Loss at Bristoe Station, Va.

Lomax's Brigade

1st Maryland Cav. Battalion - 3 k 11 w 5 m = 19
OR Vol. 29 Part 1 p. 467.

5th Va. Cav. - loss unknown

6th Va. Cav. 0 k 17 w 0 m = 17
OR Vol. 29 Part 1p. 468

15th Va. Cav. - 4 k 14 w 4 w & m = 22
OR Vol. 29 Part 1p. 469

Total: 7 k 42 w 4 w & m 5 m = 58

Wickham's Brigade

18 k 89 w 4 m = 111
Lt. Col. William R. Carter's diary entry for Oct. 11,

1863 in Sabres, Saddles and Spurs p. 94.

Johnston's NC inf. Brigade

4 k 38 w 3 m = 45
OR Vol. 29 Pt. 1 p. 414

Wickham: 18 k 89 w 4 m = 111
Lomax: 7 k 42 w 4 w & m 5 m = 58
Johnston: 4 k 38 w 3 m = 45

29 k 169 w 4 w & m 7 m = 209

Chambliss NC Cav. Brig.

7 k 38 w 16 m = 61
OR Vol. 29 Part 1 p. 476

On Oct. 19th only the brigade's sharpshooters were

engaged.

It seems likely that 50 of the brigade's loss occurred

Oct. 11th.

Chambliss: 50

Total: 259

Hampton's Division

Funsten's Brigade

7th and 12th Va. Cav. - 33
OR Vol. 29 Part 1 p. 567

Gordon's NC Brigade

5 k 56 w 8 m = 69
OR Vol. 29 Part 1 p. 462

Brigade was also engaged on the 10th, 14th and 19th.
Probably lost 50 on the 11th.

50

Total: 133

Fitz Lee 209
Hampton 133

342
