John, thank you very much for getting this for me. I'm putting together a short essay on conditional Unionism in West Virginia, which is something historians don't see to recognize. Wayne Co., for instance, voted 3 to 1 against secession, but when the war started it leaned more to Virginia than to the Union. Their delegate to the Richmond Convention, Burwell Spurlock, who had voted against the secession ordinance on April 17, nevertheless was captured by Union forces at a skirmish at the Wayne Co. Court House on Aug. 28, 1861, and in November he went to Richmond and signed the secession ordinance.
