James W. Farmer, Private, Captain Thomas Capehart's** Company, North Carolina Artillery,* description: born at Bertie, N. C., age 26, Farmer, 5' 10", enlisted January 28, 1862 at Winton, N. C., transferred July, 1862 to Capt. Badhamis Company, absent without leave December 9, 62' to June 21, 1863, pay stopped, recorded on the March & April, 1864 muster roll as "detailed to cut wood Fort Caswell, Q. M. Dept.," detailed a Laborer at Forts Caswell & CampbrellApril - June, 1864, captured at Fort Fisher January 15, 1865, sent with wounded prisoners of war from Fort Fisher, N. C., to Fort Monroe, Va., by U. S. Steamer Tonawanda, Flesh wound right foot***, received at Point Lookout, Maryland prison camp January 31, 1865, transferred to U. S. General Hospital, February 2, 1865, subscribed to Oath of Allegiance to the United States, June 26, 1865, description: resident of Bertie County, N. C., dark complexion, light hair, grey eyes, 5' 9", discharged/released June 28. 1864

* This company subsequently became Company C, 3rd Battalion North Carolina Light Artillery. It was known for a few months when first organized as the 1st Battalion North Carolina Light Artillery

** Captain Thomas Capehart's Company, known as North Carolina Artillery, from Hertford County.
