My Great Great Grandfather was John W. McGann. He is listed in the Virginia Regimental History book as a member of company G 51st Virginia Infantry. On other rolls sometimes I see him and sometimes not. On the Confederate Pension Application My GGGrandmother Mary McGann listed his unit as Rives (Commander of an Artillery Unit) and his commander as Wharton. Wharton was the last commander of the 51st. I believe the 51st was destroyed, or captured at the battle of Waynesboro in 1865. I have no idea what happened to Rives's Battery. Can anyone help me make sense of this?
