1st VA Inf. Battallion Local Defense

My great great granduncle, Benjamin Franklin Durvin, was a member of the 1st Virginia Infantry Battalion, Local Defense (aka Armory or Ordnance Battalion). He mustered-in on June 18, 1863 for the period of “residence in the city” (Richmond) . The unit started out on May 28, 1863 as Capt. Henry Fitzgerald’s Company, Ordnance Battalion, which later became Company D, 1st Virginia Infantry Battalion, Local Defense. The unit consisted of employees of the Confederate Ordnance Department. My ancestor was originally detailed to the carbine factory in Richmond, VA. He started out as a private and according to a muster roll dated January 1, 1865, he was a 3rd sergeant and detailed to the “CS Armory”. Company D, 1st Virginia Infantry Battalion, Local Defense was stationed at “Chaffin’s Farm” from October 1 to December 31, 1864. I understand that the Richmond Carbine Factory was moved out of Richmond to Tallassee, AL in June 1864. Does anyone have any more information on this unit? Would my ancestor have moved to Alabama with the carbine plant, or since he signed-up to defend Richmond, would he have stayed in Richmond? I would appreciate any information. Thanks in advance.
