Not sure if your still active in reenacting, but things for the most part have evolved and improved in more recent years. Granted there will still be the folks heavily adorned with bright shiney things, cords, and other stuff because to the modern eye they think it looks so cool. However with more and more better and more authentic events with higher standards surfacing, those folks are becoming less and less. There are still some of the funnel cake carnival events existing that they flock too. But more of the authentic events around now than had been even 5-10 years ago. At the authentic and campainger events you dont normally see those folks at all.

Go back about 20 years and we commonly saw all the neon canary yellow and brass adorned dismounted cavalry with 47 pistols stuck in the belt and dragging sabers along on the skirmish line... The Artillery with everything bright red including trim, hat cords, socks and underwear... Infantry wearing cowboy or stetson blank hillbilly hats with feathers or petrified coon parts... Thankfully most of the masses have learned at least a little more and tried to improve somewhat... What you might find at a quality event today is leap-years apart from what it had been in most events authenticity wise a couple decades ago... Some still have a long way to go to be close, but its better for the majority.
