Samuel Heisler Pendleton

I am trying to determine the rank/duties/position of Samuel Heisler "Sam" Pendleton (1841-1918). At Gettysburg it appears that Sam was a Lieutenant performing staff duties for the artillery of Ewell's Second Corps. On the march into Pennsylvania he once accompanied Colonel John Thompson Brown, artillery chief of the Second Corps, and during the battle he was called on to fill the place of the wounded Captain R. C. M. Page, whose battery was in Thomas Carter's battalion. Sam had a brother (Tom) in Captain David Watson's Second Richmond Howitzers, in the battalion led by Captain Willis J. Dance - did Sam serve in the Howitzers himself at an earlier date? Earlier in the war the Howitzers was headed by (then Lieutenant) John Thompson Brown, so it would not be surprising if Brown knew Sam and was responsible for appointing him to a staff position in the Second Corps artillery.
