Thanks! Looking forward to another year of debate and discussion on these wonderful boards. Reportedly Sam and brother Tom (Hugh Thomas) Pendleton were nephews of artillery chief William N. Pendleton. The latter's son, Major Alexander Swift Pendleton, served on Ewell's staff during the Gettysburg campaign. It doesn't hurt to have connections. Unfortunately for Tom, war did not discriminate - a solid shot passed through his body during the battle, and he suffered intensely before dying.
