After William [Sgt. Billy] James Griggs' leg was amputated by Surgeon Douglas in Ridgeway, Henry Co. VA, the leg was buried in the Ridgeway Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery [now Full Gospel Church] and marked with a rock. [source: Charles Trent of Roanoke, VA].
Post war- he was a store Clerk in Sol Franklin's store near Irisburg, VA; a farmer in Pittsylvania Co. [1866], a teacher in Irisburg, VA and later after moving to Patrick Co- was a Postmaster for Kola, Patrick Co, VA near Nettleridge, VA.
William James' sister, Susan Jane, married Sol Franklin, He and his brother, George Ira Griggs, helped with the store. George Ira also served in the 42nd. According to Tod Franklin of El Paso, Texas, his great grandmother, Susan Jane Griggs met Sol Franklin when she went to visit her brothers when they were at the hospital [Confederate] in Danville, VA. Sol Franklin was with a different Unit than the Griggs family.
I keep finding more bits and pieces of his story from additional sources.
