Re: Capt. James White's Cavalry and/or Co. K, 15th

This company was known simply as White's because it remained an independent command for some time after it organized on March 17, 1862. Captain White operated along the gulf coast with the 15th Alabama Partisan Ranger Battalion without ever being formally assigned to it. When the 15th Battalion left the area in the late spring of 1863, it became Company "D" of Murphy's Florida-Alabama Battalion. This was an informal collection of four independent companies that existed briefly during the summer of 1863. White's Company, then led by Capt. Duncan McKellar, was assigned to the 15th Confederate Cavalry Regiment on Sept. 12, 1863.

Most veterans referenced their command as the "15th Cavalry" or the 15th Confederate, or as Maury's Cavalry Regiment. As mentioned above, there was a 15th Alabama Cavalry Battalion, but most veterans of that organization listed it as something else, usually as Boyles' Battalion or the 56th Alabama.
