From the accounts I have read, the Confederates at Ft. Morgan, including Gen. Page, believed they sank the USS Tecumseh by fire. Capt. Whiting claimed that fire from his battery of 7" Brooke's (I think) sank her by striking her spar. Once broken, the spar torpedo doubled-up under the ship, pulling the rope and ignited. She was sunk by her own torpedo. Interestingly, Adm. Farragut did not have a problem taking the whole fleet through the torpedo field right after this sinking. Another interesting fact is that Adm. Buchanan had purposely removed the spar torpedo from the CSS Tennessee. I'm with you that the Tecumseh should be raised. What a tourist draw for Mobile!
