Re: Fightin' Joe Wheeler
In Response To: Fightin' Joe Wheeler ()

I don't understand the comment about Covington GA; perhaps someone else can explain that.

Despite various opinions about what kind of leader Wheeler was, for better or worse he has to be described as a major Confederate leader. His major accomplishments include covering the retreat of Bragg's army from Kentucky, his ride around Rosecrans' army during the fighting at Murfreesboro and his destruction of McCook's Raid at Brown's Mill near Newnan GA. On the down side, Confederate leaders described his forays into Tennessee (October 1863 and August-September 1864) as "useless plundering raids". He has also been criticized for mishandling Confederate cavalry during the Tullahoma and Chickamauga Campaigns.

Wheeler was a favorite of General Bragg and a loyal defender when Bragg fell out of favor. Incidentally, Wheeler believed Cleburne's proposal about arming the slaves was little short of treason, and stated that anyone who suggested such a thing in his home town would have been taken to the nearest tree and hung.
