Re: Fightin' Joe Wheeler

Wheeler was one of four former Confederate generals in service during the S/A War. Fitzhugh Lee was another; can't name the rest.

Col. William C. Oates also served and includes a chapter in his book about it. Oates' comments on conversations with Northern officers during the S/A War regarding the motivation of the typical Confederate in the ranks, the men who "handled the muskets and did the killing", ring as true as anything I've read. Oates didn't have the education to embellish his thoughts or polish his words like many others. He still tends to be verbose (like any successful politician) but you don't wonder what he really means.
